Boat Surveyor in Istria – Umag, Novigrad, Poreč, Rovinj, Pula

Buying a used boat in Istria? Istria is the Croatian region with the most permanently moored boats, and for many owners from Austria, Germany and Slovenia it’s the closest home port on the Adriatic. I inspect boats in the marinas of the whole west coast, from Umag to Pula, and in Rijeka.

I’m Ivan Gregorig, a marine surveyor listed in the expert register of the Udine Chamber of Commerce and a court-appointed technical consultant (CTU) at the Court of Udine. I’ve spent about 25 years in the boating industry and know the Istrian marinas first-hand.

Rocky seabed: the main risk in Istria

The Istrian coast is mostly rocky. Unlike the sandy lagoons of the northern Adriatic, a keel here hits rock, and the risk of grounding is higher than elsewhere.

Contact with rock doesn’t leave widespread scuffs but concentrated, deep damage that is often hard to see from outside. On Istrian boats I pay particular attention to the keel and the keel-to-hull joint, the keel bolts, the laminate around the keel stub, and the rudder, shaft and propeller. I also lift the floorboards to inspect the bilge and the structures around the keel directly.

Keel damage must be known before you buy: it affects the price, and sometimes the decision.

Where I work

Umag, Novigrad, Poreč, Funtana, Vrsar, Rovinj and Pula (Verudela), plus Rijeka. In Slovenia I work in Koper and Izola; Dalmatia on request.

The survey

The on-board inspection usually takes 4 to 8 hours, depending on size and complexity. You receive a detailed PDF report with photos, in English, within 48 hours.

In Istria especially, I recommend hauling out the boat: keel damage can only be reliably assessed on the underwater body. Haul-out and relaunch costs are paid by the buyer and invoiced directly by the marina.
